President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at New Patriotic Party (NPP) hoodlums in Kyebi who engaged in violent conduct aimed at disrupting his campaign tour of the Eastern region stronghold of the opposition party on Friday, saying their conduct is a disgrace to Kyebi, a town which is supposed to be the heart of democracy in Ghana.

The President pointed out to the ‘all-die-be-die’ hoodlums that their attempt to scuttle his campaign in Kyebi because it is Nana Akufo-Addo’s hometown is most disgraceful because the NPP flagbearer campaigns freely in his (President Mahama’s) hometown. He reminded them, that since he became NPP flagbearer for the 2012 election, Nana Akufo-Addo has taken his campaign tour to his hometown Bole, in the Northern region, not less than three times but not once has there been such a shameful incident.

Making the point that Kyebi is becoming notorious for political violence and intolerance being perpetuated by the dominant NPP followers there, the President pointed out to them that their shameful conduct does not give credence to the struggles of prominent citizens of Kyebi of old whose efforts contributed immensely to democracy in Ghana, which is why the area is known as the home of democracy in Ghana.

NPP supporters on Friday began putting into practice ‘all-die-be-die,’ the violent behaviour being preached by their flagbearer ahead of the 2012 elections, when they tried to physically prevent President John Dramani Mahama from campaigning in the Akyem capital town in the Abuakwa South constituency.

This uncultured attitude of Nana Addo’s supporters came to light when they had the information that President John Mahama as part of his campaign tour is visiting Kibi yesterday. Information gathered indicated that, because Nana Addo’s supporters has vow not to allow NDC to campaign at Kibi, they therefore started destroying both platform, posters, signboards and anything decollating with NDC colours in the morning. Aside the destructions to prevent President Mahama of coming to Kibi, they started attacking some of the supports of NDC. The Daily Democrat noted at the durbar ground in front of Okyehene’s Palace that NPP supporters wearing Nana Addo’s T-shirts and some having serious confrontation with some supporters of NDC.

In an interview, the Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Abuakwa South Constituency, AlhajiSanusi Mohammed confirmed the destructions of posters, platforms and attacks that were mated to them by Nana Addo’s supporters just to prevent President Mahama from coming to Kibi.

According to the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Nana Addo and his supporters are very much aware that the NDC is gaining more grounds in the area especially Kibi, they have stared adopting all ways and means to prevent the NDC from undertaken any activities, hence the attack. He therefore urges all his supporters to stay come without responding to any provocation from supporters of NPP, but rather focus on the one touch victory ahead.

AlhajiSanusi disclosed that Nana Addo after becoming an MP for four years did not undertake just a single project in the constituency. A lot of people the paper spooked to condemn the behavour put up by Nana Addo’s supporters at his own home town, saying that is not how democracy should be practiced.
