Ishmael Ashitey, Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate, has said ridding the capital, Accra, of filth and street children will be his foremost objective after he has been approved by the Appointments Committee of parliament.

He said Accra was very filthy, a situation needing urgent attention by all stakeholders.

Mr Ashitey was announced as the Greater Accra Regional Minister by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday January 24 at the seat of government. He is one of ten persons nominated as regional ministers for various regions by the president.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday January 25 in connection with his appointment, he said: “What we have to do immediately is to clean the capital city. Accra is very dirty and so that should be something everybody must help fix and so cleaning the capital city is one of my objectives.

Secondly, several children are on the streets selling, posing a danger to their lives. And so we have to see how best all these children selling on the streets will go to school and those who want to work will get decent work to do. The president’s vision of One District One Factory will help those who have migrated from their villages and towns to Accra without a decent place to live to go back to their hometowns. Over there, they will get decent accommodation.”
