Kumbumgu MP Ras Mubarak has described as illegal, the directive issued by Minister-designate of Local Government and Rural Development, Alima Mahama, on behalf of President Nana Akufo-Addo, ordering all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to leave office.

The letter revoking the appointments of the 216 MMDCEs said: “By virtue of Article 243 (3)(b) of the constitution of the republic, H.E the president of the republic has revoked the appointment of all MMDCEs with immediate effect. In this regard all MMDCEs are directed to hand over their relevant duties to MMDCEs for further instruction.”

The announcement followed recent pressures mounted on the MMDCEs who were appointed by the previous government to leave office following the investiture of Nana Akufo-Addo as president on January 7.

The letter also noted that new MMDCEs would be announced soon.

Commenting on the matter, however, Mr Mubarak said it was illegal for a minister who was yet to be vetted and approved by parliament to dismiss public officials. “She [Alima Mahama] has no such powers and, as a lawyer, ought to have known that she can't act on behalf of the President until parliament vets and approves her nomination. They are beginning to make a total shambles of running the country.”
