The Ghana International School’s (GIS) Annual Sponsored Walk came off last Saturday, 15th October 2016, in the Eastern Region.

The walk started at Kitase in the Akuapem South district of the Eastern Region through Berekuso and ended at the Presbyterian Women’s Institute at Abokobi, in the Ga East district of the Greater Accra Region. The 15km health walk, which was the 45th, is aimed at raising awareness and support for mental health.

The yearly event was part of efforts to raise funds for both school projects and supporting mental health, in memory of two GIS students, Jason and Kerry Fung, who lost their lives in the 90s to a man who had a psychiatric condition. The walk had over 1000 participants, comprising students, parents, guardians and teachers taking part.

Principal of GIS, Dr. Mary Eshun in an answer to why the distance is not too tortuous for the participants, said the decision to cover the stipulated distance, was a way of enabling the children come to terms with the fact that, the world in which is bigger than the school’s environment.

At the end of the walk, prizes were awarded to the fastest walker (teacher, student and parent categories), fastest class, class with most funds, class with most walkers as well as a raffle draw for the students
