Africa's biggest beach soccer league kicks off

Ghana Beach Soccer Championship Ghana Beach Soccer Championship

Sixteen beach soccer teams from across Ghana have begun the journey of supremacy to decide who will win the national beach soccer championship league.

Saturday 25th July 2015 will be remembered as the date on which a new and exciting chapter was written about the fastest growing sport in the West African sub region. The idea of scrapping a second tier league until next season's zonal structure is adopted, is already showing intriguing signs.

Local side Wuo Gbee delivered a supreme attacking display to thrash Winneba Giants by 7 goals to 0. Reigning champions Mighty Warriors begun their title defence with a one sided 5-0 win over African Angels.

Last season's runners up Sunset Sports from Keta also made light work of Teshie United in a fast and furious game that ended 3-0 to the lads from Keta.

Another team that has been tipped to challenge for honours this season is Sea Lions. With a new management under former Joy fm Super Morning Show producer James Afedo, much is expected from the Lions. However, the CEO had to endure a nervous start from his players who eventually defeated Tema United by two goals to one. Surprisingly the Afcon 2015 Beach Soccer Goal King Alexander Adjei failed to get his name on the score sheet with a rather slow start to the season.

Ada Assurance made an impressive re-entrance to the league with a well fought 4-2 win over last season's Division 1 champions Nungua BSC.

Gulf Powers and Dansoman BSC also kicked off their season with 1-0 and 3-2 victories over Tegbi Youth and Layoca respectively.

The 2015 league season will arguably be the most challenging and intense since the inception of the CAL Bank sponsored beach soccer league in 2011.

With just the first week played, La based Wuo Gbee have taken the lead on the league table but are closely followed by defending champions Havedzi Mighty Warriors.

Saturday 1st August will give beach soccer lovers another opportunity to enjoy exciting matches as the league enters week 2 at the Laboma beach soccer arena.
