Ghana Red Cross to promote maternal health

The Swiss Red Cross Society in collaboration with Ghana Red Cross Society have launched Maternal Newborn and Child Health Programme in the Upper East Region.

The Programme which is to be implemented in four Districts in the Region is aimed at complementing efforts by Ghana Health Service to help confront maternal and infant mortality.

To help enhance the smooth implementation of the Programme, Swiss Red Cross has donated a vehicle to Ghana Red Cross Society.

Mr Daniel Syme, Deputy Regional Minister in a speech read on his behalf at the ceremony recounted the contributions of the two relief organisations to the region.

He said during the 2007 Disaster that hit the region, the two organisations sought assistance from International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent to support the victims.

Mr Syme said they also contributed towards awareness creation on maternal and health, sanitation and malaria prevention and partnered Ghana Education Service to open up some schools in deprived areas in the region.

The Secretary General of Ghana Red Cross, Mr Kofi Addo said his outfit has partnered Swiss Red Cross Society to undertake a lot of humanitarian services to the vulnerable in the society, including establishment of optical centres , construction of houses for disaster victims and the donation of relief items.

The Country Director of Swiss Red Cross Society, Mr Seth Addae -Kyereme said the body would continue to collaborate with Ghana Red Cross help expand and improve upon its operations .

The Regional Manager of Ghana Red Cross Society, Mr Joseph Abarike said the society would strive to make the project a success.
