Rotary Club sponsors eye treatment, surgeries for residents

The Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central and Koforidua New Juaben in collaboration with Sight for Africa Clinic, have launched a free eye care medical outreach for the residents of Koforidua and its environs.

The eye care project dubbed “Eye Camp” which is slated for 23rd February to 2nd March 2013 would comprise eye screening, treatment and surgeries for people who would visit the office of Sight for Africa in Koforidua.

Addressing the media, Madam Mawusi Nyahe, said the project was intended to screen about four thousand people within the Koforidua Metropolis for eye problems and perform about one hundred and fifty minor surgeries for those who might require them.

“The exercise would involve eye screening, treatment and surgeries for Cataract and Glaucoma to be performed by a medical team from India and Ghana at the Sight for Africa Clinic in Koforidua”, she said.

She said the project which is an annual medical care event initiated by the Rotary club of Accra Ring Road Central about six years ago and formed part of its volunteerism program in the area of healthcare.

“The vitality of any community depends on the health of the people and Rotary believes this project would contribute to health care delivery to the target communities.”

Madam Nyahe urged residents of Koforidua Metropolis including children to visit the Koforidua branch of Sight for Africa Clinic between February 23rd to March 2nd 2013 each day for the programme.

She said Rotary International, which is the world’s first service club organization, has over than 1.2 million members who volunteer their time and talent to the wellbeing of humanity.

Dr Kofi Ghartey, Founder and President, Sight for Africa, praised the two Rotary Clubs for the initiative and their selflessness and called on others to follow suit for the betterment of the society.

“I must commend you for your service to humanity, which most of the time causes you to provide and support people you do not know”, he said.

Mr Samuel Okae-Adjei, President, Rotary Club of Koforidua-New Juaben, expressed the readiness of his club to continuously assist the underprivileged in any way they could.
