Eastern Region record 102.2 per cent in immunization

Koforidua, April 30, GNA - Eastern Region has recorded 102.2 per cent of its target of 530,743 children at this years mass immunization exercise though the results from three remote zones of the region are yet to come. The zones whose results are yet to arrive are the Dwarf Island and its other island settlements in the Kwahu North District. Ms Emelia Diana Okai, the Eastern Regional Disease Control Officer, told the GNA in an interview that the Akyemmansa District recorded the highest percentage of 127.1 in the immunization exercise while the Yilo Krobo District recorded the lowest percentage of 94.2 per cent of their target.

Records showed the region has not recorded any case of poliomyelitis since 2003.

She said the children who were immunized were also given vitamin "A" supplement that also helps fight diseases that attack children. Ms Okai called on parents to support mass immunization programmes to prevent their children from contracting preventable diseases. She appealed to opinion leaders including leaders of religious organizations to enlighten their members on mass immunization programmes to enable them take advantage of those exercises.

She expressed gratitude to community leaders, volunteers, the World Health Organization and many other donors who supported the programme in diverse ways.
