New captain for Celebrity Gold Club outlines vision

Akwasi Opoku has been elected the new captain of the Celebrity Golf Club, one of Ghana’s most vibrant Golf Clubs.

In a hotly contested election over the weekend, Mr Opoku overcame a challenge from Mark Perverett to win the club's captaincy and would steer the affairs of the club for the next two years.

Speaking in an interview after the election, Mr. Opoku who previously served as vice captain of the club thanked members of the club for giving him the opportunity to serve the club as captain.

He said his main vision for the club is to develop the playing surface and after play facilities to pristine levels with members’ interest and transparency at the core of his administration.

“This vision is attainable with a vigorous effort to obtain sponsorship and assistance from corporate organizations and commitment of the membership of the Club” he added.

He said other objectives his team is looking forward to attaining is the greening of the Fairways and Tee-Boxes; embarking on a membership drive to expand the membership of the club; establishing a website and Newsletter for the club; re-introducing the Celebrity family day event and revamping the ladies and juniors section of the club.

The new club captain also stressed the need for the club to be seen as an active and responsible member of the Sakumono community within which it is located.

“As our corporate responsibility towards the Sakumono Village, the Club will facilitate the introduction of the Village Saving and Loans Association (VSLA) for the women. This system offers progressive people in urban-poor communities the opportunity to contribute towards a pool and on-lend to themselves with an agreed interest rate”.

Before rising to the top position of the Celebrity Golf Club, Mr. Opoku had previously served the club in various capacities, member of the Executive Committee, Competitions and Handicap Secretary and Vice-Captain of the club.

Other executives elected last weekend included Kusi Ohemeng Treasurer, Geoffrey Avornyotse- Competition and Handicap Secretary and Charles Sekyere Course Superintendent.
