People with type 1 diabetes can't make insulin. In fact, 90-95% of diabetes is type 2. People with type 2 diabetes make some insulin but either it's not enough, or their bodies just aren't able to use it properly..."
You do have SOME understanding of the disease, but a thorough understanding is necessary to help you know what a "cure" would really entail.
I will oversimplify, just for the sake of gaining a thorough understanding.
You can liken the Type-1 and the Type-2 variants of the disease to a case of a LOCK and a KEY, where Insulin would be considered the key and the lock would be the insulin receptor on every cell. (A "receptor" is just a protein on the surface of the human cell, to which another molecule can bind and trigger a process).
In the case of Type-1 we have normal locks but not enough keys. For Type-2, we have the keys, but the locks are defective.
For Glucose to enter the cell (to provide energy), you need enough keys and the locks must be normal. With the keys the door for glucose is unlocked and glucose pours in, and the cell is happy! If the lock is jammed (as in Type-2), glucose cannot enter the cell and hangs around, leading to the high blood sugar we see in diabetics.
In Type-1 (mostly the Juvenile Diabetes kind), there are not enough keys. The pancreas is where the keys are manufactured. For some not well understood reason, the immune system of the Type-1 patient attacks the factories that make the keys (the pancreatic beta cells). Thus, Type-1 is an "Autoimmune Disease".
In Type-2, the locks are defective. When insulin binds to the Type-2 cell, (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma) the chain of signaling events at the molecular level becomes erratic. Thus, the cells do not respond well to the insulin, the gates do not open, and glucose piles up in the blood.
So having said all that, what would a "CURE" really mean? Reprogramming the immune cells to recognize the pancreatic beta cells? (in the case of Type-1) or changing the genetic code to make proper insulin receptors (for Type-2)? My friend, these are very complex scenarios. The pharmaceutical industries only APPLY the science.
You first must explain what you mean by a cure.

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and put on Metformin on June 26th, 2014. I started the ADA diet and followed it 100% for a few weeks and could not get my blood sugar to go below 140. Finally i began to panic and called my doctor, he told me to get used to it. He said I would be on metformin my whole life and eventually insulin. At that point i knew something wasn't right and began to do a lot of research. On April 13th I found this book on natural-diabetestreatment.com/diabetes-destroyer-review/. I read the book from end to end that night because everything the writer was saying made absolute sense. I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100, the next day was in the 90's and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70's and the 80's. My doctor took me off the metformin after just one week of being on this lifestyle change. I have lost over 30 pounds in a month. I now work out twice a day and still have tons of energy. I have lost 6+ inches around my waist and I am off my high blood pressure medication too. I have about 20 more pounds to go till my body finds its ideal weight. The great news is, this is a lifestyle I can live with, it makes sense and it works. God Bless the writer. I wish the ADA would stop enabling consumers and tell them the truth. You can get off the drugs, you can help yourself, but you have to have a correct lifestyle and diet. No more processed foods.

Please make sure you have your HbA1c test done every month. This is the test that really matters, not just blood glucose; it measures how the elevated sugar IN THE PAST has affected your organs (by the way your hemoglobin was glycosylated by the sugar). It provides a view of blood sugar elevation over three months period.
Also, bear in mind that Type-2 diabetes, in reality, is a CARDIOVASCULAR disease. The disease changes the way the liver makes bad cholesterol, which greatly affects the blood vessels and the heart, potentially leading to strokes and heart attacks. So, have your blood lipid profile tested regularly (say every 6 months).
Finally, it is not enough to watch calories. You must eat a lot of food with SOLUBLE FIBER, to help trick the liver to get rid of bad cholesterol.
Also monitor your blood pressure on a daily basis, and eat foods high in potassium (especially vegetables).
Think of diabetes as a stroke/heart attack disease, and stick with SCIENCE! There are no easy ways or shortcuts.
