It is not the president who should have the courage to do anything: every Ghanaian should have the courage to do the right thing. Why after 50 years of independence we still think that somebody should educate me that we are the government and that stealing from the government is better than working for the government. We all need to realise that we make the government and working together rather calling each other derogatory names will do us good.

Yes,it is the responsibility of the President to reform the way the country is ran. One glaring example is for the government to be bold and take steps to computerize its operations in many of the institutions in Ghana, especially in the Ministries, without fear of the massive layoff that will follow.
Personnel can be reduced by 50% in many institutions which will reduce the ridiculous 60% expenditure of GDP on salaries for government employees.
The government needs to be bold and take radical steps to offload the redundant personnel in the various departments. It can stay its course and keep this bloated machinery in place because it is afraid of public reaction to any steps to save money.
On the other hand it is the same public that is condemning it for the absence of basic necessities.
Government should be prepared to accept condemnation and show POSITIVE RESULTS rather than to be praised and HAVE NOTHING POSITIVE TO SHOW.

Sorry buddy. Yes replacing people with computers is pretty cool. What about all the light off going on? Look sure there is waste but we have to be smart and efficient. I won't subscribe massive layoffs if we don't really have the personnel to do the work. How many people are computer literate? Sending emails is not menough you know...are these people proficient in word, excel etc. the problem is not the numbers the problem is we are not efficient and the reason is there is no accountability. If we were to set goals for all employees and promotions based on merit/achievements and not seniority ...trust me all the nonsense going on will stop. Right now every institution knows who the potential next round of bosses are.It is all because we are looking at who is next in line. If we start having some 21 year old runing some big time positions the culture will change. People will be more productive and competitive.

You are right. We need to be patroitic and realise that no other nation will look for Ghana's welfare if Ghanaians dont. Ghanaians steal money from Ghana coffers to save in other countries banks. Other nationals invest in their countries to build their nations. The average Ghanaian believes that Government money is to be looted and not taken care of, holding public office means entitlement to boss over others and get bribes to do the job he is paid to do, and worst of all we donot think of the future of the nation or the establishment we work in. We are too quick to believe we are cleverer than others yet we are very shortsighted.
Yes, we can make Ghana proud if we take our jobs as important as our homes. No point in building a beautiful house in an area where there is no road leading there or no water or other amenities.

As much as I like Kwweku's article, I think we are all quick to point fingers at the government and those in leadership position. When are we as Ghanaians going to demand the MPs to have the townhall meetings? When are we going to in our small way lead by example. Most of us throw stuff around. When will we look for the dustbin and throw our stuff into them or when will we volunteer to provide one. I am sorry we are all to blame and not the government alone. If you want to see how bad or terrible things are ...just check our own neighborhoods. We are all enabling the filth, check our schools..so dirty. Look it is not going to take Mahama or anyone else is going to take all of us to start making a difference in our small area and by the way the way to make sure it perpetuates is to start highlighting people doing it.

Excellent piece with some concrete examples. I look at Ghana and just want to weep in term of their inefficiency. Being a professional, I would never work in this Ghana because I will work my ass off and others will be chopping money and taking bribes. Don't want to waste my time. My father even regrets after 60 years coming back to Ghana after being top of his class in MIT (one of the best schools in the world)in the states. He was framed many times working as one of the best brains the country has produced. This guy even remembers what he was taught as an 18 year old and he is 78 years. His ideas even now on what Ghana needs to do to sort out some of its problems. Public Sectors organisations should be made institute performance management systems to assess yearly what is and is not working to help make strategic decisions which benefits the country. Any one who wants more money should do more quslifications or apply for jobs with higher salary (no stealing or fraud) should be entertained.

Kwaku, thank you for this beautiful piece. In Asmara, at 5pm on working days, all ministers leave their official vehicles and drive in their private vehicles home. Can President Mahama direct his ministers to take the lead. All over the country, we see Government vehicles on the road to funerals, private farms, parties, dropping the children of the rich at the airport, hotels etc. Project vehicles are more or less the properties of the MDs, the Chief Directors etc.
Kwaku, can you come back to this site in six months time to review what the Mahama administration is doing on the suggestions you provided in this article?
Thank you for being a true nationalist. Mahama and his team must be men and women of thought and action if the country is move forward.

Who exacerbated the problem in the first place? What were they thinking when this presidency decided to increase by an astronomical amount the salaries and benefits of the Presidency, Judiciary and Legislature when the ordinary majority of ghanaians are hardly making a living wage? It's laudable though that this president is trying to do a balancing act to appease the poor ghanaians on whose bent backs the fat cats walk to collect their undeserved salaries each month.
Against conventional wisdom the president withdrew the subsidy on petroleum products, the safety net for the poor working class and unemployed alike. Is this balancing act supposed to be a Mahama version of "shared sacrifice" which has become a catch phrase among the democratic leadership in America ? It's morally fair and socially just that rich or poor, everyone should suffer equally the slings and arrows of our current outrageous economic fortunes but why can't we also share the wealth when the going is good for the politicians and their cronies? At the time the presidency, judiciary and legislature were receiving their increments real wages for those who're lucky to be still working had flat lined for a long time.Where is the shared wealth for the poor.
By any reasonable measure of fairness when something breaks it's the responsibility of those who broke it to fix it. If the notion of shared sacrifice carries within it the concept of fairness then shouldn't those who benefitted from the recklessness that has brought the nation to its knees and the need for sacrifice be the ones called to make the sacrifice or at least bear the brunt of it ?
The administration have borrowed more money in the short span of 4 years than all previous administrations from Nkrumah put together. There's almost nothing to show for this huge expenditure so the question on the lips of many is "where's the money?"
It's true that there's too much waste in the system. There are too many ministers, parliamentarians,DCEs, etc than we actually need. There are too many ghost names on the government pay roll that must be expunged. We don't need a Council of State that is too partisan because the work they do for the executive is already assigned to others and it's in reality a duplication of functions and a waste of public funds.
What about increasing productivity in the public sector? There are too many ministers and their deputies who don't sit at their desks to do the jobs we pay them for but instead spend about 80% of our time hopping from one Fm station to another trading insults with their opponents in the name of defending government policies. If they won't work at their desks then they must not be paid.We should work 40 hours a week and be paid for approved overtime work.
We cannot continue to keep doling out money we don't have . This nation must be treated like a business not like Santa. When we pay out money we must get our money's worth in return.
The president's initiative is bold but it's too little too late. It does not go far and deep enough to effect real changes that will stimulate an economic recovery that in turn will stimulate growth.
