Have you seen how white people work? Have you worked with some others in the usa? White person will be in the dir that is how northerners work. The upper region just doesn't a good climat and unfortunately doesn't have natural resource and is not the capital so no work no attraction to help it. Am happy that Mr Haruna Abugre you able to sit down draft this article, I will say may God bless you and may God give our youth vision to see things like this. The region can only change if we change our selves, there are so many things that when you take a look at them you will have many question to ask as you have just asked. Greedy and jealousy is what is killing the region's development. Some people don't want to see others growing, they won't help others to grow even if they can.

Your grand fathers accepted islam and they made them look like monks and warmongers and no future thinkers,no schools. If they accepted the Adventists, methodists and the other missionaries, there would have been more schools and education, good health and life with expectations. Having said that, I will confess that your women are among the most beautiful in Ghana so give them to marry the Ashanti people who are willing to move to any corner of Ghana to make a living. If you hated Akan or Ashantiman because of politics you are making a mistake because in Ghana they are the people who love to move around and live well with any society. I am half Anlogaman, half fanti, quater Ashanti, and some percentage northner (from great grand parents)but I like the Ashantis. When you live in Kumasi and you decide to be good they like you as their own. Travel and see people!!! Nevertheless don't worry because of you travel to Europe and the Western world you see that The whole of Ghana is a big village. All the best

I don't know how lazy people can pound fufu and be watch men and house boys and garden boys. Both Hot One and Abugri have completely lost their thinking faculties. Abugri's use of the words primitive and backwardness reveals his standing in life as far as history is concerned. For Europeans to enslave and colonize Africa, these were the very words they used. As for conflicts, it is not located in the Upper East alone. Heard of Dagbon? Europe had a 100 years of war until the Treaty of Westphilia. What Abugri can do is form an interest group and agitate for the type of education he thinks can improve the living standards in the region instead of calling himself backward and primitive.

I perfectly share with your frustrations and the views you express. I have pondered over this millions of times and done a bit of research on the matter.
Quite apart from the fact that people in leadership positions only help their close relatives, will you be shocked to learn that all the initiatives initiated by govt to address the poverty situation in the North in general have been bungled by northerners put in charge? Name them: URADEP, FASCOM, TONO IRRIGATION, VEA IRRIGATION, BONTANGA IRRIGATION, GHANA COTTON COMPANY ETC ETC. If these had succeeded the face of the north would have been markedly different. But it was not white people or people from the southern part of Ghana who messed these bold initiatives. They were all looted for personal individual gain by full blooded northerners put in charge!!!!!
Of even more insidious contribution to the backwardness of the UER is the loss of confidence. Why should a full blooded son of the area string a name like HARUNA SUMAILA ABUGRI? Don't you have two Kusasi names to add to the Abugri? Even yours is not the worst case: Some Kusasis even have three Arabic names as their identity? Must you hide your identity even if you turn moslem? In this regard I must doff my hat for Dagabas and Frafras. I must confess that this inferiority complex seems to be highest amongst Kusasis where even Christians are hiding behind moslem names. You can retain your Kusasi, Frafra, or Dagomba names and still be a good moslem or christian (see the Fante moslems, or best still Nigerians).
So Haruna Sumaila Abugri, please build up your confidence and when you assume a responsible position you will do the right thing. Next time I hope to see you disclose your full Kusasi names!
By the way I travelled from Bolga to Bawku at the year end and was wondering if there are any politicians from the UER. If Ghana is finding it difficult to manage the whole country, why don't we cede it to Burkina Faso? Perhaps as Southern Burkina Province, the UER might see better development.

HOW?
If after fifty years of free education and your own recount of how your own people have messed up all initiatives to develop the region, how will merging with Burkina Faso develop the region?
Are you saying merging with Burkina will make the Upper Easterners to change their attitudes or you think the Mossis will give you better free things than the Akans have been giving you?
Go to Accra and Kumasi and see all the people from that region with big businesses but have abandoned their own region. Who do you want to go and develop the region for you? The Asantes invest in their region, likewise the Bonos and Kwahus and that is why they have better regions than the Northerners. Let the indigenes invest in their own backyard instead of building their mansions and businesses in Accra and Kumasi.

The must be a change of attitude and mindset. A friend from the area told me about this problem and I did not believe it and could not comprehend it. I think it all boils down to love of homeland and your own people. Selfishness is a big problem. It happens to other people of different tribes too.. This master servant mentality or I am better than you, or you are better than me has to be eradicated and opportunities made available to all. After every thing else we are all Ghanaians and deserve equal opportunity. If the people from the same area are mismanaging affairs then somone from a different area who has the people and place at heart should be made to manage the programs.

You ask some good questions about regional development. You make some erroneous statements too regarding the types of schools in the region but never mind. Before you write any more on this issue, I suggest you do some research yourself to know the types, nature, instrastructure and other aspects of institutions in the region. Then also find out about how much efforts have been put into establishing those very institutions that will attract people to educate their children there.
Whilst you are at it, ask yourself why until recently, there was NO UNIVERSITY anywhere after Kumasi. We need good schools at all levels in the region to attract people to work there for example.
Of course the people from, and of the region need to come together and work together with a strategy for development of institutions, businesses and people in the area but investment needs to come from the people, government and inward investment from outside.
May be the region can identify sister regions elsewhere and partner with them on specific projects. There are good attempts and projects in the region but yes, development is slow and I am sure we as Ghanaians can do a lot to change that. By the way there are other regions and areas of Ghana too which have serious problems with development. Bear that in mind.

UPPER EAST NORTHERN REGION VOTED FOR A CORRUPT , THIEF AND DICTATOR TO BE PRESIDENTOF GHANA.
Being well educated through free education, he felt that he had to marry into Twi-speaking ( Brong-Ahafo) rather than his back-ward tribal ladies.
HOW COME !
My brother is married to a Northerner, from Wa, we love her so much so, for over 35 years, we do not see or regard her as any difference in her behaviour or character .
YET MAJORITY OF UPPERB EAST NORTHERN REGION PEOPLE VOTED TO BE PRESIDENT OF GHANA, A CORRUPT DICTATOR, WHO IS NOT PROUD OF HIS TRIBAL CUSTOMS AND VALUES NOR HIS LADIES.
A former Attorney General, Martin Amidu, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s challenge for persons alleging corruption against him to report to an investigative body as “hollow.”
Mr. Amidu rather called on President Mahama to “set up a bi-partisan committee of Parliament to take evidence from Ghanaians on the matter of corruption in his Government.”
In a statement, Mr. Amidu cited two instances - acquisition of five aircraft for the Ghana Armed Forces and the issuance of an executive consent to off load the E. O. Group shares of over US$300 million to Tullow - which he said are only “two examples to show that corruption or the perception of corruption in this Government is endemic and systemic and was not personal to my late friend Professor Atta Mills. The people infecting this Government with the endemic corruption and abuse of office for private gains are alive and in President Mahama’s Government.”

Mr Abugri you are right.Let me add that those of us from the region need to get back home and help with infrastructure. That is the simple three bed room house that each capable one of us puts up there will help restrain our people from travelling down south during the period of construction hence some cash for their farm work. This will also help the school chaps to make some money for school through their regular source of by-day which we provide through our private home construction.
This suggestion is simple but is very practical. It is used in many world bank projects where the projects are brought to the community to help in job provision leading to poverty alleviation

A very good article and just from some comments i can see the negative respond, My brother you have brought in a good point,This has all is how the country Ghana it self was befoe but progress have been made and development is increasin,They are many educated Upper East Region students leavin the region for other pat of the country were there are benefitin from what Upper east has developed,As a country Ghana and like many in the south still look at the region as backwards i can give you this example,Is like if you are in the western world and seein the image or how they portry Africa so is how the far regions some look at Upper East Region. It has to come among us from us and like what the western world dont kno more about Africa so is the rest of Ghana to understand that although with got our problems but i bet the love of the region through is multicultral people is so uniq,It has to be that we should not let the influence of the others hurt us,Just look at the North in general always has been so so till among us we start doin what was like before love unity,I was raised around the social center building which was my play groung were the st john school and st charles and co was always diff group tribe playin together sharin, but soon when people move and some faces that come in with wealth which is that wealth change people and the more some families are gettin stronger the more the greed is increasin, but the love is there,we have to make the effort of sayin we can build it, like the football team being called Upper East United is all the effort of the good men of the region who really care and have it at heart to help,so your effort even if just an idea and you gettin more toward that positive thinkin wil do wonders brother.Hope that the cryin for the people of Upper East region will come out positive and it shall be well. One Love and peace up and Its gonna be fine,Lets pray that those with the effort to want help should really be given the chance to do so.

GHA, a pity you don't identify ?ourself. Was there anything irresponsible about my suggestions? Please note that as others have also commented on this forum, the writer did a poor job on an issue of major national importance which merits debate beyond this forum.
Is there anything wrong in saying that? By the way I have lived, studied, worked and run projects in different parts of Ghana and speak FIVE Ghana languages, FOUR of them fluently. I have my roots for which I am immensely proud and cherish but WHO ARE YOU? We don't even know your name so identify yourself and show us how "responsible" you are.
There are complex, historical and contemporary issues affecting the northern regions and if I may ask, how long did it take for the first university to be cited in the northern regions? And when did hydroelectric power reach the north?
And by the way what percentage of the regions actually have a reliable power and potable water supply? Don't you think these issues along with good schools and other major amenities also influence development of the area? Do you realise how much concerted, planned and committed investment is needed to change your "curse" into a 'BLESSING?'
In my view the writer has not articulated his views well and has not armed himself with the facts to enable him do so for such an important issue affecting our nation. Please also note that this is not the first article that I have suggested is in a inappropriate forum on Ghanaweb. GHA, STOP BEING HYPOCRITICAL.

What you wanted to say was that, the writer should not have brought this issue to the forum because it makes the Upper Easterners to look bad. Tell me, if not this forum, then where can he voice out his concerns? The writer was right, these tribes from the three Northern regions always want to blame others for their problems without accepting responsibity for their own behaviour. People marrying multiple women and procreating without thinking about how to take care of them makes the services of those old men in their areas perpetrate this primitive behavior that some children needs to be killed because they are evil who make their parents poor, what kind of people are these?
Accept responsibility for your own irresponsible behaviour as the bane of your problems instead of blaming others.

Abugri or who? Please IF you are are true son of the Upper East, just make sure you consult Primary school children in Navrongo to help with the draft of such a document. AS I am sure a true son of that region will not be so stupid enough to write such a denigrating article that is void of any sense on Ghanaweb with the sole intention of making a mockery of northerners. Many of such articles will start coming up as the Incumbent President is a Northener even if he is not specifically from that area.GHANAWEB is meant for people who love GHANA and not for Tribalistic CROOKS with criminal and divisive mindset.

I can't believe the writer purports to hail from the Upper East Region. I hail from Navrongo and I don't recognise his argument. Yes there is poverty, yes the literacy levels could be higher but reading his article makes me think anyone educated in the Upper East (I was educated in Big Boss), would have been able to write something more articulate.
My advice to the writer/author is to take this saying as advice "Charity begins at home". In other words, he needs a degree of introspection.

my bro. thank u 4 yr article but be patience our bros n sisters who are in the hem of affairs are working around the clock to reduce this menace of poverty, illiteracy, and above all tribal sentiments. the working mechanism they will use I think is the youth. if they are united then there wouldn't be parallel tribal lines, land litigations, poor talent hunt,i.e those poor students who perform excellently in academies should be hunted for. these are in the villages to become village rogues and wee smokers. the region have great men n women who working hard we appeal they will identify n locate these brilliant ones n offer the opportunity to excel. fred

Central Region is catching up fast at the bottom. With free education in the north, C/R will soon be at the bottom if not already there.
