The dysfunctionality of the US Congress is staggering and all public polls constantly rate their performance so low that it amazes me when Africans think that their way of doing politics is OK and I see elements of that partisan and sometimes crass approach of unreasonableness among Ghanaian politicians.
I personally believe if Congress had worked with the president and the US government over the last four years, America's economy (and the world economy) would have been in a far better place right now. There were those who were bent on making Obama "a one-term president" and for them that was all that mattered. I am afraid I am seeing similar signs and fault lines in Ghanaian politics but I am heartened by the president's pledge to unite the nation and work with others to make our country better. I wish him all the luck in the world and pray he succeeds but hey, "it takes two to tango".

A brilliant piece and very educative. You are above average and Ghanaians do not like that so they will wake up and dare you to a mud wrestling match to bring you to their level. I was very angry as a kid when Acheampong forced himself on us via a military coup. Coming to think of it, Ghana was not half as bad as things are today. We had our shipping fleet and the factories were still running. People had jobs, plus Ghanaians then were responsible unlike today. Soldiers will always be soldiers and they do not belong in politics but comparing Acheampongs boys to what Kwaku Gyata left us with makes Acheampong look like a saint. Everything is turned upside down yet Ghanaians will never embrace positive change. There was no reason or room for envy because there were equal opportunities for all. Hard work paid off. Today the average Ghanaian wants to get rich by any means necessary. No sweat. Unfortunately this new mindset is not going to go away until something very drastic happens to shake things up like we have never seen before. Give a beggar 20cedis and he will tell you he takes only dollars. Ghana exclusively plays in the big leagues my brother.
