Ghana Youth Council Urges Free, Fair Elections

Ghana Youth Council Urges Free, Fair And Peaceful Elections In Ghana - HOW THE ELECTION OF BARACK OBAMA AS PRESIDENT OF THE USA SHOULD INSPIRE ALL OF US.

The leadership and members of the Ghana Youth Council take pride in the election of Barack Obama as the first African –American President of the United States of America. It is no mean achievement for a black man to rise to the highest pinnacle of power to lead the world’s most powerful nation. This feat is indeed historic and unparalleled against the backdrop of the history of the black race and their struggles in America.

As we celebrate Obama’s victory, and to a large extent the symbolic victory of the black race over the forces of racism and bigotry, the maturity and magnanimous spirit of the body politic of American citizens who made Obama’s election possible, peaceful, and violence- free cannot be lost on us. If Americans can conduct elections and all parties involved (victors and the vanquished) can peacefully accept the results without resorting to violence, so can we as Africans and Ghanaians in particular.

In this regard therefore Ghana Youth Council calls on the leadership and members of all the political parties in Ghana to ensure that Ghana’s upcoming elections be free, fair, peaceful, and violence- free. We have come a long way as a country on a continent where too often, the negative experiences far outnumber the positive ones. So far Ghana has been fortunate to avoid the situation of countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Liberia among others. Ghana still remains a beacon of hope in Africa and we should all strive to keep it like that. After all it is the only home we have as Ghanaians!

As we nurture our young democracy and nation, it goes without saying that there is always a winning and a losing party in every election. Our leaders and all Ghanaians must therefore understand that our ultimate quest is not winning an election per se, but building a sound democratic nation with a strong economy so we can all live in peace, dignity and prosperity.

We therefore urge all our Presidential and Parliamentary candidates to come together and speak with one voice for peace to reign in Ghana before, during and after the elections. It is only in peace that the nation can tackle the challenges of creating good jobs, providing good education for the youth, providing quality and accessible healthcare, decent housing, security, good roads, potable water and the host of amenities that make any country worth living in. As citizens of Ghana we have a common destiny and share a common vision of a prosperous, peaceful country where we can all be the best that God intended for us to be. Our mantra therefore is: PEACE! PEACE!! PEACE!!!
