GHAMRO organises a day seminar for Ghana Police

The Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) is organising a one day seminar for the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region today, Monday June 19, 2017 at the Mikilin Hotel in Kumasi.

This seminar is to educate the police on aspects of the Copyright Law of Ghana, and to sensitize them on the new tactics adopted by music pirates in the country . This exercise is in line with GHAMRO's relentless effort to combat and minimise the music piracy canker in the country.

Music pirates have recently adopted the use of laptop and desktop computers to download both local and foreign music on pen drives, MP3 and other storage devices and subsequently sell same to unsuspecting members of the general public.

This unlawful act denies the right owners of the appropriate income expected from the sale of their works through legal downloading sites that markets their works on the digital music platforms worldwide .

Notice his hereby given to the general public that it is unlawful to purchase music transferred on to pen drives or any hard disc and to report any such activity to GHAMRO or the nearest Police station.

Any person or organisation that uses music commercially in the form of downloading , or generating any form of benefit from music digitally must apply to GHAMRO for a license in order to be legitimate.

Failure to get a license contravenes Act 690 section 42 of the Copyright Law 2005 and is punishable under section 43, to a term of imprisonment of not more than 3 years or a fine or both.

All affected persons are advised to immediately contact the offices of GHAMRO to regularise their activities to avoid any embarrassment.
