Beauty myths explored

For years, people have claimed toothpaste cures their zits and cold showers makes their hair shinier, but is there any real evidence to back this up? Here, we look at some old-school beauty myths that really get results.

First up, it's that age-old tale that toothpaste can get rid of spots.

According to experts, this is true because it has the ability to dry pimples and reduce redness and swelling. However, don't start slathering spots in the minty mouth freshener just yet.

Toothpaste should only be used as a temporary solution and is best at tackling new, smaller zits. Squeeze a small amount of plain white paste on your clean ring finger before applying a thin layer. Too much toothpaste can irritate the skin, so be cautious.

Leave the toothpaste to dry before peeling off carefully.Puffy eyes are the bane of many people's lives and if expensive lotions and potions aren't doing the trick, maybe you should consider something cooler.

Cucumber slices have long been sported by ladies lounging in spas, but it seems there are facts to back up their use. Cooling the slices first helps to shrink blood vessels beneath the skin and reduce any fluid. Cucumbers are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties because of their high water content and can have an impact when used for five minutes. But sadly they won't fix the problem of puffy peepers forever.

Caffeine can also banish bags for a short time. Try placing cooled tea bags under your eyes, or look out for creams that contain caffeine, as they can encourage blood vessels under the skin to reduce. Did you also know that haemorrhoid cream can temporarily combat puffiness, as it has anti-inflammatory agents.

If you're determined to have shiny hair, then it's worth knowing that cold showers could make your locks look more lustrous. After washing your tresses as usual, rinse with cold water for ten seconds - or longer if you can bear it.

This helps close the hair cuticles, which will strengthen strands and leave your mane looking glossy. Avoid using heated styling tools afterwards if you really want to shine.

If the thought of cold showers leaves you shivering, then vinegar might work instead.Mix one part vinegar with four parts carbonated water and soak your dry hair in it. Leave for 15 minutes before shampooing to combat dullness.

Here's one last unusual beauty tip for anyone suffering from dry skin as the temperatures plummet. Simply take a ripe avocado, remove the skin and pit and mash in a bowl. Cover yourself in the green mush, then sit back and relax for 20 minutes, before rinsing off. Avocado is a natural moisturiser, so you will be left with silky smooth skin.
