Wiyaala to engage in developmental projects

Ghanaian afro-pop singer, Noella Wiyaala has announced as part of her upcoming project a partnership with UNICEF which will see her be an ambassador to “End child marriage “&”End child Poverty.”

The afro pop singer disclosed this on This Morning with Patrice and Kokui that this project will present the opportunity to give back to the society that established her.

“I’m in a project with the UNICEF and because of that I’m more in the Upper West region. In order to help the community, I moved back home to my big family where we say let children be children, I meet the children, bring them to the studio and we have fun.

“Through this little little things we might discover the new Wiyaala.”

Wiyaala joins a long list of influential people including singer Angelique Kidjo to have been tasked with ending this menace in Africa.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) identified in 2014 that globally, each year, 15 million girls marry before their 18th birthday, meaning that, each day, 41,000 girls get married, and every minute, 28 girls below age 18 get married, with a girl getting married every two seconds.

Also analysing the data on child marriage across continents, UNICEF says, South Asia and Africa are regions with the highest prevalence rates of child marriage, describing projections in sub-Saharan Africa as “even particularly alarming, due to rapid population growth” contending that, the devastating consequences of child marriage were likely to affect an even larger number of girls in Africa in the coming years if positive and significant steps were not taken to address the problem.

The ‘Rock My Body’ artiste also announced her upcoming festival in the Upper West in December. The event, she stressed, will be solely a live band affair, featuring local artistes.
