The Legon Palmwine Guitar Band of the Department of Music, School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana has been invited to perform at the 10th Anniversary of the African Cultural Calabash festival at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa from September 30 to October 4, 2015.

The African Cultural Calabash is an annual folklife event curated and produced by the Applied Ethnomusicology section in the School of Arts- African Music and Dance division of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Legon Palmwine Guitar Band is one of the ensembles at the Department of Music, University of Ghana that creates an environment where students experience and share in the performance heritage of Ghana’s music traditions.

Its main focus is the now extinct palmwine guitar music tradition whose sole performer is legendary Agya Koo Nimo.

Their aim is to preserve, promote and perform Ghanaian highlife music. The setup includes the guitar, the kpanlogo drums, the prempresiwa and vocals.

According to the director of the Highlife ensemble, Eric Sunu Doe, the festival provides a unique opportunity and platform for the students to showcase their indigenous music heritage to the world as well as enhance their musical knowledge, as they shall meet other young musicians from other parts of the world.
