'Afoko, Agyepong must resign or be impeached'

The Greater Accra regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party Ishmael Ashitey has hinted that the party would impeach party Chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong if they fail to resign.

Three regions – Central, Eastern and Volta – have passed a vote of no confidence in the beleaguered national chairman and the general secretary following their reported involvement in the killing of the Upper East regional chairman of the party Adams Mahama.

Speaking on Morning Starr Mr. Ashitey told host Kafui Dey that if the two party executives fail to resign after a petition is presented to them, signatures would be collated from 40 percent of the delegates who voted for them to impeach them from office.

“If we want to remove them we would collect signatures of 40 percent of people who actually voted from them to start the process of impeachment, what we are doing now is not actually impeachment.

“We are only writing a petition to ask them to step aside; it is when they refuse to step aside that we would activate the process of impeachment,” Mr. Ashitey said Tuesday on Starr 103.5FM.

Mr. Ashitey added that it would benefit the party in 2016 if Afoko and Agyepong step aside.

“It would be good for all of us, the party and they themselves for them to step aside”.
