Afari Gyan must resign now... - AFAG

The Director of Operations for Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG) has called on the Chairman of the Electoral Commission to resign because of the shame he has brought upon Ghana’s electoral system.

In an interview with Peacefmonline.com, Davis Opoku Ansah (OPK) was of the view that the EC Boss, Kwadwo Afari Gyan, has brought the name of the nation’s electoral system into disrepute by ignoring due processes laid down for the District Assembly elections, thereby creating the avenue for some candidates to sue the Commission.

He was also bewildered by the EC boss’ deafening silence on the injunction placed on the District Assembly Elections which was to be held on 3rd March, 2015.

“It's been 24 hours after the Supreme Court ruling on the District Assembly Elections and Afari Gyan and his entire commission has not had the courtesy to apologize to Ghanaians and explain to us how we got to this stage of our growing democracy. This is a big blunder that cannot be forgiven without reasonable explanation.

“After this gargantuan error that has led to the nation losing valuable time and resources, the commission has refused to apologize to us and for me, it's untenable and unacceptable,” OPK said.

For this, and many other reasons, OPK wants the EC Boss to vacate his post now even though he is due for retirement later this year.

“Afari Gyan and his commissioners must resign as soon as possible. There is the need for a massive reform of our electoral laws, especially, the structure of the EC that leaves everything at their discretion...,” he opined.
