President's nominee gets outright rejection

Assembly Members of the West Mamprusi District, on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to reject the president’s nominee, Mr Alidu Iddrisu Zakari, for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

Thirty members out of the 41 member house voted against him, while eleven endorsed him, which showed that the nominee had been rejected outright and had no chance of a second round of voting for possible confirmation.

The nominee needed 27 votes, which would have been two-thirds of the house, but ironically, more than the required two thirds rather voted against him, which made it impossible for a second chance.

Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Northern Regional Minister could not convince the Assembly Members to endorse the nominee to facilitate development of the area.

He had earlier appealed to the members to put the past behind them, and vote to confirm the nominee to achieve a common goal since development could thrive in the area without a substantive DCE.

Mr Zakaria, a former MP for the Walewale, accepted the verdict of the Assembly Members, and advised his sympathizers to also accept the outcome and not to go about fomenting trouble.

The election was supervised by officials from the Electoral Commission.
