Even Mahama believes Akufo-Addo won 2012 elections – Sir John

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie insists Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won the 2012 presidential elections and “even John Dramani Mahama believes that Nana Akufo-Addo won the elections”.

He said that was why the NPP consented to a court challenge against the results announced by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“Of course, we did not agree with the verdict of the [Supreme] Court but we had to accept the finality of the litigation.”

Mr Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, was speaking on TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, September 24 when he made these remarks.

He was answering a question that sought to find out how successful he was as NPP’s General Secretary.

Sir John said he won the 2012 elections for the NPP and that, to him, is the foremost achievement of any national party executive.

“I believe that Nana Akufo-Addo won the 2012 elections,” he insisted. “I have no doubts at all about that.”

Asked why he lost the mandate to continue as Secretary of NPP, Mr Owusu Afriyie said he commands huge followership among the grassroots of the party but “they did not have the votes”.

“The very few people who had the votes spoke eloquently and I accepted that,” he added, underscoring that his contender, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who was elected Secretary, did better at campaigning.

“He campaigned better than I did.”
