NPP targets 30% Volta votes

The leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta region has said it is targeting 30% of votes in the region during the 2016 elections.

According to the party, they have begun implementing an 'Agenda 3-30' as part of strategies to secure at least three parliamentary seats and 30 percent of valid votes come November 7.

Speaking at a media briefing in Ho to thank the chiefs and people in the region for the warm reception accorded the NPP’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo during his campaign tour last week, the party’s regional secretary, Joseph Homnya said they are working tirelessly on the ground to achieve the said target.

Since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has received massive political patronage in the region, winning almost all parliamentary seats, except in 2004 when the NPP’s Joseph Nayan secured the newly created Nkwanta North constituency seat, which he retained in 2008 but lost it to the NDC’s John Bless Oti in 2012.
Also in the 2012 presidential elections, the NPP secured only 12.93 percent as against the NDC’s 85.47 percent of the 859,550 votes in the region.

Notwithstanding this however, the NPP regional secretary told Starr News’ Lambert Atsivor the party is solidly prepared to meet its target.

“We are very clear in our mind as to what to achieve for the NPP in the Volta region and we have put in place modalities to achieve the Agenda 3-30. We are prepared psychologically and physically with our well packaged strategies to give the NDC the shock of their lives,” Homnya noted.

Homenya also disclosed strategies adopted by the NPP during the recently organized limited voter registration exercise to thwart alleged plans by the NDC to add names of Togolese nationals to the electoral roll.

He said: “If you just watched the limited registration which has just gone by, the NDC has targeted 300000 [people] to be added in the register, we, per our strategic plan, we made sure we did not exceed 100,000 and we battled it out and at the end of the day, we had 94,199. In fact on the field, we met some of the [district] chief executives who congratulated us for the hard work done. They were really taken unaware and shocked by the performance of my team.”
