Police would deal drastically with over-loading drivers

Agona-Nkwanta, (W/R) May 28, GNA- The Police would deal drastically with drivers who over-load their vehicles with party supporters to rally grounds.

Similarly, drivers who over-load their vehicles with supporters of football clubs and mourners would be arrested and prosecuted. Mr Kwame Annang, Kwesimintsim District Police Commander, gave the warning during a political forum organised by the Ahanta West District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at Agona Nkwanta on Thursday.

He explained that "the law on overloading and other road traffic offences exist in the country and that drivers could hide behind politics, sports and funerals to break the law with impunity". Mr Annang pointed out that the road traffic laws did not exempt such drivers.

He explained that the Police are there to maintain peace and order as well as to protect lives and properties of people in the country. Mr Annang said the Police would deal ruthlessly with "machomen" who would storm polling stations with the sole aim of creating violence to disrupt the elections.

He reminded party supporters that anyone of them who misbehaves before, during and after the elections would be arrested and put before court and when found guilty jailed.

"I want you to bear in mind that if any of you misbehaves and jailed by the courts, none of your leaders would accompany you to prison", he advised.

Mr Kwame Armoo, district director of the NCCE, asked party supporters to be tolerant to other people's views adding, "tolerance is the key to the sustenance of peace in the political life of the country". He warned party supporters against destroying opponents' posters as well as to refrain from threatening, intimidation and the use of abusive language in their campaigns.
