2014 National Tourism Awards media luncheon held

The 2014 National Tourism Awards Media, Business Luncheon was on Tuesday held in Accra as part of activities lined up for the 2014 awards night.

The event which formed part of activities scheduled to take place before the main event is to inform stakeholders about the event and create a platform for them to provide their suggestions and contributions as well as pledge their support towards the event.

Mr Ben Anane Nsiah, Manager, Special Events, Ghana Tourism Aauthority (GTA), said the awards are to reward excellent performance in the tourism sector, encourage competition among industry players, build relationship amongst the GTA and the industry captains and enhance the positive image of the GTA and practitioners in the sector.

He said the awards have been grouped into two categories, namely competitive and honorary awards and would take the form of a cocktail, banquet, music performance and presentation of awards.

Other categories would also be practitioners or facilitators awards, corporate awards and personality awards.

Mr Anane Nsiah said the criteria for selection of winners would include conformity to lay-down classification standards, corporate social responsibility, fulfilment of environmental or sanitation standards, and fulfilment of statutory regulations.

Other criteria would include positive corporate image, work place safety standards, visibility, including number of branches and adherence to quality customer service or quality control.

He said this year’s national awards ceremony, has been rescheduled to December 11, and would be preceded by regional awards in all 11 regions of the tourism calendar including, Tema.

Mr Anane-Nsiah said the national events would see 32 awards given to deserving practitioners and corporate bodies for their hard work, aimed at developing the industry.

He said tourism is public sector led and private sector driven and GTA would continue to encourage its private sector partners to continue to dialogue with it, in a frank and fruitful manner to ensure that their actions remain relevant to their needs.

Some stakeholders and sponsors for this year’s award ceremony include Coconut Groove Regency, Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication, Hotels, The Turkish Airlines, Yorks car rentals, Africa World Airlines, Telefonika and Latex Foam, among others.
