Galamsey activities still vibrant at Obuasi

Illegal mining activities (Galamsey) are still going on in earnest at Nhyieso near Obuasi with a large tract of land devastated by the activities.

It is unbelievable that despite government’s intervention to clamp down on these illegal activities in the municipal area, Galamsey continues to be active within the operational area of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).

A visit to the area by a team of newsmen following complaints by the Krotihene of Edubiase Divisional Council, Nana Asirifi Asare II, saw over 200 galamseyers busily operating in the area.

Sadly, the devastated area is said to be potential building plots earmarked for development but the illegal mining activities had left the area inhabitable as a number deep pits covered by dirty waters are scattered over the area.

Information gathered on site showed that these galamseyers at night use excavator machines to dig the earth for prospecting to go on during the day.

Efforts to get the Obuasi Divisional Police Command to find out if they are aware of this development at Nhyieso proved futile; however, Nana Asirifi Asare told the newsmen that he was making efforts to have discussion with the military commander in Kumasi, responsible for Galamsey activities in the region.

“It is a serious problem as building plots allocated to some developers are being destroyed by these galamseyers. I want to have discussions with the military commander in Kumasi on this issue”, the Krotihene stressed.
