$8,050.00 water project inaugurated at Supreso

Supreso (ER) Nov. 16, GNA- A water project valued at $8,050.00.00 and built to serve 150 rural dwellers had been inaugurated at Supreso in the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District at the weekend.

Mr. Isaac Olesu-Adjei, National Programmes Officer of the Hunger Project, who inaugurated the facility, said it was a partnership between the Supreso Epicenter, The Hunger Project-Ghana (THP-Ghana) and Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central.

He said when the Supreso Epicenter building was completed last year,the health personnel were reluctant to move into the Nurses' quarters and to work at the clinic due to the absence of potable water and electricity. He said the inauguration of the water project would therefore bring relief to the health workers and members of the community patronise the services of the epicenter building.

Mr. Olesu-Adjei thanked the Rotary Club for accepting to co-fund the project and expressed the hope that the partnership would be sustained to provide water for the 18 remaining epicenters. He appealed to the communities within the Supreso Epicenter to see the facility as theirs, which they would use and maintain without having to fall on Rotary to do minor repairs. "You have to prove that your association with The Hunger Project has resulted in a change of your mindset from being dependent to self-reliant communities".

Mrs. Sophia Twum- Barimah, President of Rotary Club, Accra Ring Road Central, in a speech read on her behalf, said the project was intended to provide clean drinking water to about 150 people at Supreso and surrounding communities who frequent the Epicenter building for medical, education and banking needs as well as food storage and processing.

She announced that the project comprises a borehole connected to a 7,000-liter water tank with a submersible pump and a generator to serve the Epicenter building.

Mrs. Twum-Barima observed that with the provision of potable water, water-borne diseases in the area would be reduced drastically adding," young girls would have more time to engage in productive ventures, which otherwise would have been used in fetching unsafe water with all its attendant problems".

Mr. Samuel Flesher-Kwabi, Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District Chief Executive, advised the people to take good care of the facility to prolong its life span.

Mr James Nyakotey, assembly member for the area, in a welcoming address, said the facility had come at the right time when they were facing acute water shortages. 16 Nov. 09
