Fanteakwa District Assembly fails to elect Presiding Member

Begoro (ER), July 16, GNA - The 53-member Fanteakwa District Assembly on Thursday failed to elect a new Presiding Member (PM) after two rounds of voting. In the first round, Mr Adjabeng K. Ntori, the incumbent PM, and a retired educationist, polled 20 votes as against 27 votes obtained by his challenger, Mr Christian Nyumutsu Obere, also a retired teacher, with three ballots rejected.

In the second round, Mr Ntori had 19 votes with Mr Obere obtaining 31 votes with no ballot rejected. But the winner fell short of the two thirds majority of votes required to be able to win the PM seat. Mr Abass Fuseini Sbaabe, the District Chief Executive (DCE), in consultation with the assembly members, then asked the two contestants to confer among themselves for one to step down for the other. After conferring for some minutes, Mr Sbaabe announced to the House that the contestants failed to come to a compromise so after conferring with the officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) the election was adjourned. 16 July 09
