Dormaa Senior High gets computer laboratory

Dormaa Ahenkro, (B/A), Oct. 17, GNA - Mr Kwadwo Adjei Darko, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment on Friday said formal education provided opportunities for the acquisition of knowledge, prosperity, growth, good health and socio-economic advancement. He said it also helped to eliminate ignorance, poverty and disease and that it was in the light of this that Ghana, like most developing countries, had adopted the concept of Information Technology in its facets of development.

The Minister was commissioning an ultra-modern Computer Laboratory for Dormaa Senior High School at Dormaa Ahenkro in fulfilment of a promise he made at the celebration of the school's 60th Anniversary in 2007.

Mr Adjei Darko affirmed the government's recognition of the need to provide the most reliable medium for ensuring the rapid social, economic, political and technological development of the nation, hence the efforts at developing an educational system that would meet the weeds of the 21st Century. The Minister reminded stakeholders in education that quality education delivery was a shared responsibility and urged the government, communities, parents, religious bodies and old students associations to help provide for the needs of the schools. He mentioned the provision of buildings, furniture, books, equipment, sponsorship for brilliant but needy students, supply of computers and other scientific equipment as government's contribution towards quality education delivery.

Mr Adjei Darko commended the Dormaa Traditional Council, the Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Education Service for supporting the school and urged the teaching staff to be committed to ensure excellent results.

"To the students, let me stress that reports of misdemeanour such as truancy, alcoholism, sexual immorality, rape, drug abuse, occultism, violent attacks on school authorities and armed robbery by some misguided students across the country are becoming alarming and heart breaking indeed," he said. He urged the students to reciprocate the sacrifices and investments that the government and their parents were making for their future development and avoid acts that would render such investments useless. Miss Margaret Okyere Pomaah, Headmistress, thanked the Minister for the fulfilment of his promise and urged other old boys of the school to emulate him.

She assured the Minister that students of the school would utilize the computer laboratory to explore the vast frontiers of knowledge to widen their scope in knowledge. The Headmistress appealed to the government and the school's old boys for assistance to put up a new boys' dormitory to offset the current congestion in the boys' dormitories. Nana Kwadwo Kwakye, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, on behalf of the Minister of Communications, presented 10 new computers and accessories to the school. 17 Oct. 08
