Abokobi and Danfa get new Libraries

Accra, Oct. 6, GNA- The Ministry of Tourism and Diasporan Relations together with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation's Sustainable Tourism: Eliminating Poverty programme (UNWTO-STEP) on Saturday inaugurated separate libraries worth 30,000 dollars at Danfa and Abokobi in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra Region. The project, initiated by Ms. Dho Young-Shim, a Korean and Chairperson of UNWTO-STEP formed part of a pilot project aimed at helping least developed countries through quality education to break the cycle of poverty.

Ms. Young-Shim said the project would be replicated in the rest of the African countries and urged the children to use the facilities to enhance their knowledge.

She said Ghanaian children must make good use of their educational facilities to help utilise the natural resources. " Korea, unlike Ghana does not have gold and other minerals but through education, it has become one of the industrialised countries in the world", she added.

Mr Kofi Owusu Ameyaw, Deputy Sector Minister called on the children to take advantage of the projects to build up their capacity which would help in the country's development. He called for a good maintenance culture and urged parents to invest more in the education of their children.

Mr. Kofi Allotey, DCE of Ga East said the project was a timely intervention to provide quality education, especially for such a deprived district for socio-economic development adding, " manpower capacity of every nation depended much on education". He lauded the support of the Koreans in complementing government's effort at providing the basic facilities to improve education. Mr. Samuel Oduro-Anim, Project Officer of the Assembly said the community provided the land and the building at a cost of 80 million cedis, while the furnishing and the supply of books was done by UNWTO-STEP through their sustainable Tourism to Eliminate Poverty Project.
