600 register for employment programme

Garu(UER), Aug. 23, GNA - Six hundred unemployed youth in the Garu-Tempane District in the Upper East Region have registered with the Youth Employment Programme for placement in some selected sectors of the economy.

Those with academic qualifications and experience would be recruited into the education and health sectors as pupil-teachers and sanitary inspectors.

The other batch that requires no formal educational qualifications would be engaged in the agricultural sector on a 20 hectare with a 450-million-cedi start-up capital.

Mr. Alhassan Ghale, Youth Employment Programme Coordinator, disclosed this at a meeting with Mr. Emmanuel Sin-yet Asigri, Garu-Tempane District Chief Executive (DCE) after the registration exercises at Garu.

Mr. Asigri debunked rumours that the programme was a "job for the boys" solely for members, activist and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said the programme when given the necessary assistance would help solve the myriads of challenges confronting the youth in their contributions to national development.

Mr. Asigri said the area was in dire need of teachers and was optimistic that with the recruitment of pupil-teachers teaching and learning would improve in the area.

He said the sanitary inspectors would also ensure that the district was clean in order to reduce the frequent outbreaks of diseases. 23 Aug. 06
