Odomase was an ancient town, which served as capital of West Ashanti until 1906, when it was moved to present day Sunyani, only three miles away. Odomase was burned down by the maurading British Troops in November 1900 after the Yaa Asantewa war. This happened because one of the chiefs of Odomase was the commander of the Asante Army during the war and in order to forestall any future Odomase-led insurrection against the British. "Odomase has been overshadowed by Sunyani, a city mostly built on Odomase stool lands." as stated by Nana Apraku III
