Annual Ghana National Council Independence Dance will be held
March 7th, 2015, 9:00 p.m. at the "Dorchester"1515 East 154th Street, Dolton, IL 60419

The Annual Ghana National Council Independence Dance will be held on March 7th, 2015, 9:00 p.m. at "Dorchester" 1515 East 154th Street, Dolton, IL 60419. This year, the fundraiser dance by the council will be designed to attract new audience and supporters for the council's initiatives for the Ghanaian community.

On March 6th, 1957, the West African nation, Ghana, won its independence from British colonial rule and became the first African nation, south of the Sahara to achieve this historic landmark. The independence of Ghana therefore invigorated the civil rights movement in the United States of America when its leader, Martin Luther King, returned to the USA from Ghana in 1957. Ghanaians and Africans home and abroad therefore regards and celebrate Ghana's independence with reverence.
For the first time, the Ghana National Council has implemented an essay contest for the dance. Participants of the essay must answer in 700 words or less on the theme "What Ghana at 58 means to me". The essay must be emailed to ghananationalcouncilchicago@gmail.com by Feb 15th, 2015. Cash awards for the winners are as follows; first place $300.00; second place $200.00 and third place is $100.00. Participants must be under the age of 30 and be present to receive the award.
Guest and key note speaker is Dr. Samual Akainyah, a reknowned Ghanaian Artist and professor at the Kennedy King College, Chicago Illinois. Dr. Samual Akainya is also a first cousin of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana.
Ghanaian born Afrobeats musician MoeSBW and Nigerian Afro-R&B artist SLV will perform at the function. MoeSBW (Fuad Mohammed) is known to take his audience on a journey from the sounds of his homeland Ghana (Nima) down to the hip hop inspired beats of Chicago, his new base. His most anticipated single recorded few months back featuring the super talented Ghana artist of the year Shatta Wale titled "Twerk N Dance" . It was produced by EphraimMusic and set to be released with a video in July 2015. SLV is an award winning Afro-R&B artist/songwriter since 2010. SLV has written songs for various artist including all of his hit songs such as 'Ileke," "Swagha Yi Poju" and "Fayawood."
The mission of the council is to help ALL Ghanaians in the Chicago Metro area discover their career potential and supporting them in making changes to bring this potential to serve the community. The council also aims to help every Ghanaian to live comfortably and have access to all benefits and support provided by the city, state and federal government.
Doors will open at 8:00 p.m.Food will be served from 9:00 until 11 p.m. by PK's Catering Restaurant & Banquets, owned and operated by Kujo A Baffour.
