Alavanyo-Nkonya Peace Committee Of North America

Wades Into The Peace Process

With the recent resumption of land dispute and skirmishes between the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya traditional areas of the Volta Region, the Alavanyo-Nkonya Peace Committee of North America (ANPC) has added its voice to the on-going peace process between the two communities.
The ANPC was formed in 2006 by some concerned citizens from the two traditional areas resident in North America to serve as a unified mouthpiece on issues pertaining to their respective traditional areas and also, to foster friendship and good neighbourliness, both at home and abroad.
It is, therefore, no surprise that the Peace Committee held an emergency meeting in Toronto, Canada, on March 10, 2013, to discuss, among other things, strategies towards permanent peace and mutual trust, following recent disturbances in Alavanyo and Nkonya.
In a joint communiqué addressed to His Excellency President John Mahama, and copied to Togbega Tsedze Atakora VII and Nana Okotor Kofi I, Paramount Chiefs of Alavanyo and Nkonya Traditional areas, respectively, the ANPC called on the two communities to:
• exercise maximum restraint in the current fluid situation
• desist from provocation and all forms of violence
• expose and report to security agents any citizens with intent to disturb the peace
• return to the negotiation table to work towards total peace
The communiqué further asked the President of the Republic to, as a matter of utmost urgency, intervene to help save lives and property.
Ministers, other government officials, religious bodies, non-governmental organizations, youth groups and individuals involved in the peace negotiations were also served copies of the communiqué.
Messieurs Simon Adzraku and Edward Anku signed on behalf of the Alavanyo group, whilst Messieurs Obed Adore and Foster Owuatuh signed for Nkonya.
After the signing ceremony, members of the committee dined together in the spirit of friendship and solidarity. Dinner was sponsored by Ms. Mavis Tekpeki, proprietress of Afro Delicious Restaurant, specialists in continental African cuisine, located at 7007 Islington Avenue at Steeles Avenue West, in the City of Vaughan, near Toronto.
Other leading members of ANPC are: Dr. Evans Z. Fiakpui, Mr. Kwabena Dwemena, Mr. Philip Kewame Fosu, Dr. Mattson Atsunyo, Dr. Samuel Dzodzomenyo, Mr. Newton Kofi Fiakpoe, Ms. Comfort Adom-Boafo, Ms. Comfort Anku, Mr. Charles Atsu Fiakpoe and Mr. Parku Pongo.
