Court jails driver's mate 20 years

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced one Mokli Yaw Kwame, a driver’s mate, to 20 years imprisonment for robbery.

Kwame was said to have robbed one Gawu Ester Afi of one Samsung Galaxy Note Two, worth GHc2,000, one USB pen drive worth GHc51, and an amount of GHc300.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ernest Acheampong, told the court that, the complainant, Esther, is a statistician residing at Oyibi, while the convict is a driver’s mate resides at Dodowa.

DSP Acheampong said, on November 21, at about 1030 hours, while the complainant was at home, the convict scaled over the fence wall, and sneaked through the kitchen door into the hall, with a knife.

He said Kwame attacked the complainant who was in the hall at gunpoint, and demanded for cash and mobile phones.

The prosecution told the court that, the complainant handed over a Nokia mobile phone to the convict, but he rejected it, and demanded a Samsung Galaxy Note two that the complainant was holding.

He said Kwame forcibly took the phone from the complainant and subjected her to severe beatings, took her to the bedroom where he searched through her things looking for money.

DSP Acheampong said the complainant finally gave her purse containing GHc300 to Kwame, who then struggled with the complainant, in an attempt to rape her and in the process tore her dress and underwear.

He said the maid of the complainant realizing that her madam was in danger, went out and called some security guards who also spotted a police patrol vehicle and drew the attention of the policemen to the robbery.

He told the court that the security guard and the police patrol team swiftly moved to the scene and the convict on seeing them, scaled over the wall and took to his heels into a nearby bush.

The prosecution said Kwame was pursued and was arrested by one of the policemen.

A search on him revealed a Samsung Galaxy Note two, an amount of Ghc 243, and a knife.

In his caution statement, Kwame admitted the offence and mentioned Sherry and Sesso, now on the run, who were with him at the time of the offence, as his accomplices
