Sales Officer appears in court for fraud

A sales officer, Divine Kwakuyi, 44, on Thursday appeared before a Takoradi circuit court for issuing false cheques.

His plea was not taken and would re-appear in court on August 18.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Richard Boatey told the court presided over by Mr. Charles Bamfo Nimako that the complainant, Festus Frimpong, is the Marketing Manager of Far East Mercantile Limited in Accra and the accused worked with the same company.

He said between January and July 16 the company gave Kwakuyi products worth GH? 273,694 to be supplied to only accredited customers of the company but he failed to account for the monies paid to him.

DSP Boatey said on July 17 the accused issued 22 UNIBANK cheques amounting to GH? 218,622.43 as being monies paid by the customers who received the company’s products.

The prosecution said the complainant presented the cheques at the UNIBANK branch in Takoradi for withdrawal but there was no money in the account. On July 21, another customer of the company paid GH? 17,500 to Kwakuyi but he failed to account for that also.

Frimpong became suspicious of Kwakuyi and tried to contact him on phone but proved futile. Frimpong amounted a search for Kwakuyi and upon a tip-off arrested him when he was about to escape from Takoradi and was handed over to the Police.

Kwakuyi admitted having supplied the company’s products worth GH? 155,000 to one Isaac who is not an accredited customer of the company but could not trace him.
