Police not source of gun supply - DCOP Boakye

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has dispelled rumours that some members of the service are supplying AK-47 guns to armed robbers to destabilise the region.

The Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Nathan Kofi Boakye, said “none of our AK-47 guns has gone missing. Therefore, it cannot be true that any of my men were in supply of the guns.”

Rather, he said because the country was surrounded by a number of war-ravaged countries, some foreigners managed to bring in such guns.

Reward

Meanwhile, DCOP Boakye has reminded the public that the acquisition and handling of AK-47 guns by civilians is illegal and promised a reward for anyone who would lead the police to retrieve such guns.

He said the handling of such guns and other sophisticated ammunitions was the preserve of the security services and, therefore, anyone found in possession of them would be deemed an armed robber.

The police commander, who was speaking on a wide range of issues, also declared a number of hardened criminals, including Bontey Killer, who allegedly shot and killed one Yaw Antwi at Ash Town in Kumasi recently, wanted.

He announced the arrest of some key suspects who had confessed their involvement in series of robberies in the region.

DCOP Boakye said they would be paraded before the public on Monday and processed for court.

The police commander impressed on the affluent in the communities to help put up police posts and provide the needed facilities to make the services by the police more accessible to the people.
