Police task force intercepts 'wee'

A Volta Regional Police Command task force has within two weeks intercepted five buses loaded with substances suspected to be Indian hemp. The task force also arrested four drivers in connection with the interception.

In all, 198 parcels concealed in unsuspecting parts of vehicles were seized from five vehicles with registration numbers GE 8533-12, GT 5734-12, GE 4084-12, GB 37733-12 and GN 33797 which were all bound for Accra. The vehicles were arrested at various checkpoints at Have, Asikuma and Juapong.

Conducting some media personnel round the exhibits at the weekend, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Volta Region, Mr Alex Bedie, said a police officer was knocked down at Juapong when he attempted to stop one of the vehicles.

The vehicle failed to stop after knocking down the police officer.

He said the police officer was rushed to hospital, treated and discharged.

Mr Bedie said the drug couriers had adopted several tricks in a bid to outwit security personnel.

These include stuffing of doors, cello-taping the underneath of vehicles and concealment in engine parts.

He said the police had been able to uncover the tricks either through tip-offs or extra vigilance and curiosity.

He said the four drivers apprehended so far had been remanded in prison custody.
