Atomic Energy installations threatened by encroachment

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has said encroachment on its lands by squatters and real estate developers is posing a threat to its installations.

GAEC is located North-West of the University of Ghana. It is about 24 km from Central Accra and 6 km off the Legon-Madina road towards Kwabenya through Haatso township.

The Commission has told STARR NEWS it is worried about the increasing encroachment and warned that GAEC may not achieve its nuclear power project as a result of the problem.

Deputy Director General of the Commission Professor Kwame Aboh said GAEC needs help to stave off the illegal encroachers.

“It doesn’t give us enough space to work and you are being threatened, installations are being threatened,” he complained.

Prof Aboh said apart from the encroachment, lack of funds is also hampering the activities of the Commission.

GAEC was established by an Act of Parliament (Act 204) in 1963. Its main functions include the promotion, development and utilisation of the peaceful applications of nuclear and biotechnological techniques for economic and social advancement of Ghana.

In pursuance of these objectives, the Commission has established Institutes and Centres, which carry appropriate research activities.
