Trade Ministry to regulate textiles importation

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) will from June 1, this year regulate the importation of textiles into the country through three approved entry points, namely the Kotoka International Airport, Tema and Takoradi Ports.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the sector minister, made this known during official visit to TEX Styles Ghana Limited (Vlisco GTP) in Tema, explained that this is an administrative initiative by his ministry not only to prevent inferior textiles from entering the country but to also encourage the local production of cotton.

Mr Iddrisu said the move would help check the growing menace of imported cotton into the country. He hinted that the National Task force to check the sale of inferior textiles in the markets would soon be reconstituted.

Mr Eric Van Der Staaij, Managing Director of the company said water and electricity supply were the major challenges facing the factory.

He said with 900 employees everything possible was being done by management to cope with those challenges to enable it live up to expectation.
