Unibank donates GH¢10,000 to support childhood blindness

Accra, June 30, GNA - Unibank Ghana Limited on Thursday donated 10,000 Ghana Cedis to the University of Ghana Medical School, Korle-bu, in support of a childhood blindness control project. The donation, which is to sponsor the restoration of eye sight for six children, also formed part of activities marking the 10th anniversary celebration of the Bank. Mr Owusu Ansah Aware, General Manager in charge of Operations of Unibank, said the plight of the children touched the hearts of the management and staff and that it was a privilege to support them to undergo the surgery.

He said the Bank, as part of its corporate social responsibility policy towards the vulnerable in society, was keen to restore the sight of the less privileged children. Mr Ansah Aware said the core value of the Bank was to care for people, adding that the donation was an example of the level of care towards the public.

Dr Stephen Akafo, Head of the Eye Unit at Korle-bu, said the childhood blindness control project was to provide preventive, early detection and treatment services for children with avoidable causes of blindness.

He noted that the commonest problem was cataract but the high cost of treatment prevented parents from seeking early medical attention thus worsening the condition. Dr Akafo commended Unibank for their kind gesture toward the project and called on other organisations to help eliminate childhood blindness in Ghana. 30 June 11
