Ghana, Japan Sign 2.7bY Aid Agreements

Accra (GAR), June 25, - Ghana and Japan today signed two separate aid agreements for a total of 2.664 billion yen or 22.790 million dollars for two projects. The first, a grant of 1.698 billion yen or 14.530 dollars, is for the construction of a fishing harbour at Sekondi. The second is a grant of 966 million yen or 8.260 million dollars for rural water supply in the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions. Mr Kwamena Ahwoi, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, and Mr Akihisa Tanaka, Japanese Ambassador, signed for their countries. Mr Ahwoi said both projects will contribute significantly to the improvement of the quality of life of the people. "The Sekondi Fishing Harbour Project would have a significant impact on the fishing industry in Ghana as well as playing a key role in the re-emergence of Sekondi as a thriving metropolis." He said extension of good drinking water to the rural areas has always been a major requirement of government adding that the grant will help in achieving that aim.
