GHANA'S INFLATION RATE UP

Ghana's inflation rate during March was 29.34 percent a year, 3.35 up on January' figure of 25.99 percent.

According to the Ghana Statistical Services, the National Index for March 1995 was 38,561, which compared with the index for February 1995 (36.394) shown an increase of 6%. Of the components of this index, inflation for the Food sub-group rose even faster to 6.7%.

Increases in the index for the detailed sub-groups were as follows, Transports and communications (11.4%), Clothing and Footwear (4.5%), Gross Rent, Fuel and Power (13.8%), Beverages and Tobacco (4.5%), Furniture, Furnishings and Households Equipment and Operations (4.6%) and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (4.7%).

The National Index for March 1995 compared with March 1994 (26,855) shown an increase of 43.6%. Out of the total 11706 points difference the Food Sub-group contributed 4154 points and thus accounts for 35.5% of the overall increase.

The point to point inflation rate increased from 35.6% in January to 43.6%in March this year.
