Fertilizer depot project abandoned at Oda

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) Media Tracking and District Development Auditing Project team working in the Birim Central Municipality in the Eastern Region has uncovered a fertilizer depot project started in 1972.

The building was started during the Supreme Military Council regime led by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong to serve as a fertilizer depot for the southern sector of the country.

Speaking to the GNA team at Oda Mr Prosper Kojo Klu, the Officer in charge of Root and Tuber Improvement and Marketing Programme (RTIMP) at the Birim Central Municipality said the building had been lying uncompleted all these years.

He said they found it difficult to get appropriate place to store fertilizers, creating problems for farmers in the area.

Mr Klu, who is also the officer in charge of fertilizer application in the municipality, appealed to the government as a matter of urgency to complete the project which could store over 30,000 bags of fertilizer and could be used to store cocoa and coffee.

Mr Klu said the inadequate yield experienced by farmers in the country was due to poor planting methods and the poor application of fertilizers.

He said it was against this background that as part of the measures to sustain food productivity in the country, farmers in the area are being educated on the appropriate application of fertilizer to get the required yield.
