Adu-Amankwaah re-elected as TUC Secretary-General

Kumasi, Aug. 7, GNA - Mr Akwasi Adu-Amankwaah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) was on Friday night, re-elected unopposed to serve another four-year term at the Seventh Quadrennial Delegates Congress held in Kumasi.
Four other executive members were also re-elected unopposed at the congress.
They were Mr Alex Bonney, National Chairman, Mr George Frimpong, First National Vice-Chairman, Mr J.N.Y. Atoprey, Deputy Secretary-General in-charge of Finance and Administration and Mr Kofi Asamoah, Deputy Secretary-General (Operations).
Madam Anita Agyei was elected unopposed as the Second National Vice-Chairperson, following the decision of Madam Winifred Amugi, the former second vice-chairperson not to seek re-election. They were sworn into office by the acting Chief Labour Officer, Mr Ofosu Apenteng.
Mr Apenteng also swore a nine-member reconstituted finance board of the organisation into office.
In an acceptance speech, Mr Adu-Amankwaah, on behalf of the executive thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in them. He said the TUC had a bigger challenge to ensure fair and concrete living wage for the Ghanaian worker.
He said the organisation, which would be 60 years next year, needed to show physical achievements to workers to enable them appreciate the necessity for the continued existence of the labour organisation.
Mr Adu-Amankwaah charged the members to contribute their quota to ensure the growth, unity and strength of the organisation. Mr Bonney called for co-operation and support from the rank and file of the organisation to enable the executive perform their duties efficiently.
He said the challenges ahead called for commitment and dedication by all members to achieve their goals. The delegates also approved a number of amendments in the TUC's constitution.
They, however, voted against a three-term tenure of office for a Secretary-General, as was proposed by some members of the organisation. The Tema and Winneba District Councils of Labour were rewarded for their immense contributions towards the growth and development of trade unionism in the country.
