African boxing great, Azumah Nelson has expressed displeasure at the current state of the country’s boxing, laying the blame at the doorstep of the coaches.

“Boxing has to be the mind and Ghana is blessed with the talent. Just a matter of coaching will make Ghana produce another world champion,” he said.

The former WBC Super featherweight champion is bent on bringing a world class boxer as he prepares his own son Azumah Jr to carry on from where he left off.

“I want somebody to step up the plate and say I am determined to becoming a world champion,” Azumah said.

The story about Ghana’s poor form to win a world title again has not gone down well with the two-time featherweight world champion Azumah Nelson, who is a role model to many boxers in the country.

The boxing ‘professor’ is optimistic the talent is there but how to groom it to become fully grown to bring a world title to the country should be the main focus.

In an interview with Bukom Boxing, the boxing legend laments a lot has gone totally wrong with the talents and their coaching.

He said much cannot be said about the amateur boxers especially as Ghana gears up for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.

According to him, the country has not done enough to produce world champions.

“We will try to talk to the coaches, promoters and the boxers themselves on how to go about certain things to make them the best boxers they want to become,” he added.

“One person cannot do it all. If you’re a coach and your boxer can go far and your knowledge in boxing is finished, I don’t think the boxer can become what he dreamt of becoming.”

Furthermore, the legend urged the up-and-coming boxers to give an ear to whatever their coaches tell them.

Ghana’s amateur team failed to impress at the World Olympic qualifiers as only one raised the flag high by coming third to qualify. Azumah Mohammed’s qualification is under review by ABA Federation.
