The Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has commended the leadership of the Ghana Weightlifting Association (GWA) for displaying “pro-active leadership” by acquiring sponsorships from three corporate bodies to support the activities of weightlifting in Ghana.
At a ceremony in Accra yesterday where he received the sponsorships of cash amounts and sporting gear, on behalf of the Ghana weightlifting team, ahead of their participation in the Africa Weightlifting Championships to be held in Morocco from October 28 to November 5, the minister said, “the government of Ghana will support every activity in Ghanaian sport, but it is also commendable that the Ghana Weightlifting Association has displayed such proactive leadership by acquiring sponsors of their own from the private sector”.
Indomie Ghana Limited, represented by their chief financial officer, Mahesh Shah, presented cash of GH¢5,000 and a cheque for GH¢15,000, while Bernard Annor of Berlin Sport and Fitness, distributors of ERKE products in Ghana and kit sponsors of the GWA, presented an assortment of weightlifting kits and casual gears worth GH¢8000, with the Managing Director of Evolution International, Fred Darko, presenting an amount of GH¢2000.
The President of the GWA, Ben Nunoo Mensah, thanked all the three sponsors for their support, but stressed that the association would continue their search for more sponsors in order to win laurels for the nation.
