en route to the UK Submitted on 2009-04-08 08:46:46 (modified 2009-04-08 08:49:33) On the way from Ghana So I decide on another holiday to Ghana. The cheapest ticket is from afriquiyah airways. We will have a 2.30hour transit in Libya. But that is fine- the fare is cheap, I cannot complain. We get to Libya and one of the filthiest of airports-even by third world standards- that I have ever visited. Again, I cannot complain because the fare is cheap. On my way back to the UK, I see and also go through one of the most humiliating experiences. On my way into the Libyan airport- it’s only an airport transit- I have to join a queue for immigration control. It’s a long queue and I am at the end of it. At first, I thought it’s only for people with a Ghanaian passport. The immigration official takes the passport, and uses an eye glass, and magnifying glass to look at it. Goes to stand in a different light, turns it upside down, all the while looking at it very closely. Then, hands it over to his colleague who does the same. I thought that was quite interesting, but people are known to use fake passports to travel. The next man to go up is a white man. They take a cursory look at his passport and then stamp it. Takes less than a minute and he is gone. Then a black man goes….this time a black man with a red (British passport). Out comes the magnifying glass, the microscope, stethoscope and the lights. I start getting angry. Then comes a white man en route to Amsterdam, with his black Ghanaian wife, and two mixed race children- one a baby, asleep in the his baby holder on mum’s chest. The man’s passport is given again, a cursory glance. They repeat the same ridiculous charade with the wife’s passport- although it’s not a black Ghanaian passport. Then the children- the woman is told to lift the face of the sleeping baby up twice so they can have a closer look. Now, I am very happy they are doing their job. My anger is directed at the obvious racism here. It does not matter what passport one holds, what matters is skin colour. Once you are black, you are treated suspiciously as if you were a criminal. That I can take, -I live abroad, we get that all the time- till you realise that Libya is in Africa. They are in North Africa and Ghana is in West Africa. Do we need this kind of attitude towards people of our own continent? Their behaviour is distasteful. One would rather they use the same kind of energy to keep their toilets clean, fix those broken taps in the toilets and put some toilet tissue in the toilets! We are not animals and need to clean ourselves when we have a wee or a poo. It goes without saying that I will never ever fly afriquiyah again- unless the transit is at another airport.
a visa for france Submitted on 2009-04-08 08:39:03 A visa for paris Yes I am an immigrant. I am a legal immigrant- I have the passport with the permitted stay(though limited) in my passport. For those new to this- that means I do not have an indefinite stay in the UK but I have a stay of up to three years where I can work and live in the UK. I chose to live here for the work and life experience and what it can add to my CV when I get back home.Having studied non-stop for three years, then gotten into paid full-time employment with a lot of struggle, I thought to myself- I deserve a break! Now, why not take the train and see some sights…in fact why don’t I treat myself and go to see my parents in my homeland now I have some money. So I decided on a visit to Paris for a few days- just to take a few pictures of the Eiffel tower and all. I need a visa. So I apply for one. I have my payslips and bank statement, and ID card from work but the officials at the embassy still require a letter from my employer. What a bother! But I still want to experience the thrill of the new Eurostar, so I go get a letter from my employer. Is that all? No, the embassy requires a photocopy of all the documents I have. I tell them at the gate where I had to queue-though my appointment is for 10am(don’t be late it says)- that I don’t need a copy for myself as my hotel and ticket reservation were both done online with an e-confirmation sent. So the printed copy I brought to the embassy is only for them. My payslips and letter from the employer are also theirs to keep. In fact in the interest of the current trend of being green, I thought they would appreciate this. But no, I am directed to an internet café near south kensington station which charges about 20p a page for a photocopy! So I make the photocopies. Well, I hope at least my interview will be on time. After queuing to make the payments, queuing to have someone have a cursory look at my documents to see its all ok + photocopies, I join another queue. I AM NUMBER 547 AND the queuing board is now at number 300.But I thought my appointment was at 10am! It’s already 12noon. And oooh, the security man announces- ‘for 20mins only, there is a lady at the reception selling very very nice sandwiches-I have tasted them myself- and drinks, do go buy some’. I am really hungry at this point, so I go join the queue. A pound and fifty pence for a small carton of drink? These people must be joking-does the French government get a cut of the profits? I get back to my seat and continue to wait my turn. I am sitting close to the window so I hear as people are refused for not having a letter from their employer- even those with an indefinite leave to remain in Britain. Do these people know how humiliating it is to go ask for a letter from your employer for a visa so you can go on holiday? Do these people really think that I will leave Britain not knowing how to speak French, with no job offer and go and settle in France- what for the beauty of it? I was so angry! But did I leave? No! I have already paid about 55pounds for this horrible service they are providing.. And I really want to go see France. So I wait. It gets to my turn and I have all the documents. I also explain that I will like to go back later in the year as well. He gives me a 3month multiple visa. 3months…only? After the exorbitant photocopy and visa fees? After the miserable long wait? That means come December, I will have to go through this nonsense again. I think not.
