GH¢1.00 FOR PEACE PROJECT:

INTRODUCTION:

SAGE Ghana is proposing a "One Ghana for Peace Project" as part of our contribution to ensure a successful and peaceful election in December 2008.

What is SAGE?

SAGE stands for Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship. Its mission is:

“To help create the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders whose innovations and social enterprises address the major unmet needs of our global community”.

Near the end of the academic year, the high school SAGE teams meet at a location determined by the Country (or State) Coordinator to present the results of their projects to a panel of community leaders in a “SAGE Tournament.” The presentation includes a multimedia oral presentation and a four-page written annual report.

Where is SAGE?

SAGE is an international program initiated by California State University, Chico, with participation currently of 16 countries: China, Ghana, Philippines, Russia, Poland, Mexico, South Africa, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, United States, Pennsylvania, Brazil, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, India, and possibly Australia, Canada and many more countries who intend to join SAGE next year.

Why SAGE?

This program provides an outstanding arena for high school students, college students and business leaders to complete real life business and social ventures to improve their communities. At the same time SAGE allows these students to interact and cooperate with community leaders.

All guidelines, policies and procedures are detailed in the 2007-2008 SAGE Information Handbook, available online at the SAGE website: www.sageglobal.org (see “Downloads” link).

How do High Schools Participate?

To participate in SAGE, a team of high school students is organized, and then this group must complete at least one entrepreneurship project and one community service during the academic year. The size of team can be as few as five or six members.

And it must be emphasized that SAGE in not a competitor for existing high school business organizations! Rather, SAGE is a new avenue to showcase a high school’s innovative projects to a panel of influential leaders and to develop a direct connection to nearby colleges and universities.

The high school SAGE team may be part of an existing class, such as an economics, accounting or general business class, or it can be an active student organization. The key to starting a team is to find an enthusiastic group of student leaders who are interested in entrepreneurship and community service, along with a teacher who is considers himself or herself to be a social entrepreneur, one who is willing to encourage and support their students’ participation in SAGE.

Once a high school has decided to participate, the teacher must contact the SAGE State or Country Coordinator.

What are the SAGE Judging Criteria?

In addition to completing an entrepreneurship project and a community service project, high school students are also judged on how well they integrated the following concepts into their activities:

1 Global markets

2 Civic engagement in a democracy, and

3 Environmental awareness.

4 Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s)

They also are given credit for (1) recruiting college students who act as their consultants and advisors, (2) recruiting local business and civic leaders who become members of their advisory board, (3) using the mass media to publicize their programs, (4) measuring the results of their programs, and (5) how involved were they in solving problems that relates to the Millennium Development Goals in their communities.

PROPOSED PROJECT

The project is dubbed “GH¢1 FOR PEACE” project.

Our main objective here is to ADVOCATE for PEACE before, during and after the 2008 December elections.

Our target group is the Youth and we shall advocate on the theme: "ARISE GHANA YOUTH FOR YOUR COUNTRY"

This call is as a result of the rising tension the country is currently experiencing. Political clashes here and there among the youth. Till date, leaders of our political parties have not been able to tell us / assure us of the strategy they have put in place to ensure total peaceful elections come December 2008.

Research shows that the youth form the majority of voters in this country. They are also the target group to cause skirmishes and destructions that usually results in riots. They are also the worst affected in war situations. Therefore they need to be involved in creating the peaceful atmosphere we need for this election. The nation demands their devotion to ensure a peaceful lasting election in December. Hence, our theme.

To do this, public rallies will be organized on all our public universities in Ghana (UCC, UG, UST, UEW AND UDS). This would be done in partnership with leaders from the four major political parties in Ghana (i. e. CPP, NDC, NPP & PNC). Here, leaders of all the political parties will mount one platform and in one accord assure the youth of Ghana that they are there to serve in our interest and would do all they can to ensure a peaceful election in December.

YOUTH INVOLVEMENT

To ensure total youth involvement in this project, we have arranged partnership with all the leaders of the Students Representative Council (SRC) on the various campuses to organize the students for the rallies. The SRC will also play a major role in the collection of the GH¢1 through the various SRC representatives in all the halls of residence on each campus.

We seek the mandate of every Ghanaian to contribute his/her quota for a peaceful election.

This call is as a result of the rising tension the country is currently experiencing. Political clashes here and there among the youth. We don't want 'Kenya' in Ghana. We need PEACE.

This is just an abstract of the whole project. We believe if every Ghanaian that also believes in the spirit of peace and democracy contributes at least GH¢1.00, equivalent to US$1.00, towards this worthy course, we can go a long way as far as a peaceful election is concern in Ghana. Your comments/suggestions/contributions are welcome.
