B&D hopeful of topping the charts
Submitted on 2009-06-22 07:49:16

Toronto-based Ghanaian gospel duo, B&G, is optimistic that it will be the toast of Ghana’s music industry this season as their latest album, “Who Go Fit Challenge God” is gradually amassing fans via the airwaves.

The duo, made up of two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Amoateng Akin and Doris Owusu, partly from the Ashanti and Eastern Regions, in an exclusive interview with Daily Guide, says it believes nothing can impede their success, if it is the will of God that they excel.

“If God says you are going to be this or that, no one can stop you; when Jesus says ‘yes’ no one can say ‘no’. We have been singing behind the scenes and at church for many years, but it is about four years ago that we decided to go commercial with our music. So if our dream of making a big hit comes true, then there is nothing impossible to God,” Beatrice says. Read More

Oheneba Kissi is back
Submitted on 2009-06-22 07:38:08 (modified 2009-06-22 07:41:26)

Legendary highlife musician, Oheneba Kissi is one of the few Ghanaian acts with over two decades under his belt and that does not seem to be enough for him. He is currently on sing-song, with his 13th successive album steadily enjoying massive airplay across the length and breath of Ghana.

It becomes little wonder, therefore, when his own peers revere him by his uniquely beautiful songs, love melodies, dirges and life stories; bringing a lot of encouragement, determination, admiration and enchainment to listeners.

Oheneba's fame in Ghana's music industry is common to the ordinary Ghanaian; however, his latest album entitled ‘Oheneba's 13th’ is a presentation of great lyrical contents.

The highlife sensation aka Mr Sweet Voice’s new album has been on the market for sometime now. Read More

Oh Viasat 1, you too?
Submitted on 2009-05-26 15:49:27

I was beginning to use Viasat 1 as my sweet escape from the usual bad programming on local television, and also from the uncompromising inundation of our airtime with Nigerian films and series. As a fan of quality productions, I understood that it would take a long time before seeing any productions on the network that prides itself with showing only the best TV programmes and films. I also hoped that I would never see some of these half-baked Nigerian movies on Viasat 1 but it seems that my dreams had to bow over to the ever-growing impact of Hollywood.Through out the month of May, the TV network has broadcasted a number of Nigerian films under its West African movies month theme. Frankly I hope that it ends and May and not travel beyond. Instead they should return to the usual African cinema slot were we get the chance to watch some great cinematography from our great continent, instead of loud people screaming camcorders. LOL!

What did Tinny take home exactly?
Submitted on 2009-05-26 15:40:44 (modified 2009-05-26 15:41:35)
Can someone please confirm for me and the rest of Ghanaians which award Tinny took home from the Hiphop World Awards? First of all I think the name of the awards should be changed... it is silly and misleading. How can a magazine in Nigeria hold an award for Nigerians and name it a ‘world’ award? LOL! Anyway, I was watching TV3’s Spotlight entertainment review magazine last week when I heard that Tinny had won the award for Best Hiphip Artist. The host, Sammy Forson even went on to embellish the feat saying that Tinny had stayed true to hiphop all these years (obviously he hasn’t heard Ringtone) and that finally it had paid off with an award for best hiphop artist in Africa.First of all, no such category exists in the Hiphop World Awards and secondly, if Tinny won anything it would for the best African act category, which was won previously by Samini. This category was the only non-Nigerian in the lot, so most likely that was what Tinny won. If anyone out there knows something that the Jaded Renegade doesn’t know about this subject; then let me know!!!LOL

No love for Kubolor at GMAs
Submitted on 2009-04-06 07:50:35

I remember asking in a previous posting the question: “what is Kubolor taking home from the GMAs?” In that article I wrote about how much impact the distinctively talented musician made in the past year with his 'Kubolor Music' and forecasted the difficulty he would face in winning some of the mainstream categories at the Ghana Music Awards. As if the Selection Committee had listened to me, they nominated Wanlov in some of the categories I suggested that he should be nominated in, i.e. for the 'public categories'. Last Saturday at the award ceremony, I realised that Wanlov was also nominated in all of the 'industry award' categories I had suggested, including Video of the Year and Record of the Year for 'Kokonsa'.The only thing that didn't fall in place with my earlier submissions was with the winners in these categories on the night. Without a doubt, Okyeame Kwame had a very good year with his track, “Woso' but there is no snowball's chance in hell that the video for 'Woso' is better than that of 'Kokonsa'.With all due respect, the so-called industry experts who decided on this had it completely wrong!I am afraid that again, the committee has failed to account themselves to be creditable or competent as far as this particular award is concerned! Unless of course, the best video was chosen by blind men, it simply doesn't make sense; Konkonsa had the best picture quality and storyline, Period! As for the Record of the Year, only the selection committee claim to know what it means, but from my layman's perspective and judging from past winners since it was instituted some few years back, I can conclude that, again, Wanlov deserved that award if not for anything at all, at least for making uniquely good music. Lets record talent and stop petty and pointless cronyism for once!– The END!

Who wins what?
Submitted on 2009-04-04 08:03:29 (modified 2009-04-04 08:05:43)

After tonight’s Ghana Music Awards, at least a dozen people would be hit with the feeling of being unappreciated by the industry; and it is normal. After all only one person can win whatever award at any particular moment. So those who go home with nothing tonight must know that’s how it works and should take consolation in the mere fact that they were even nominated.

Without further ado, here are my predictions for the awards ceremony. So far as public voting is concerned, this year’s GMAs is one of the most competitive yet as several of the nominees have been really strong in the past year. For me there are only two categories that have a clear winner. I think Richie deserves the Sound Engineer of the Year award, and Blakk Rasta deserves the Reggae Song of the Year nod, but now that he has been disqualified by the Headmasters of the Ghana Music Awards Academy, I wonder who will pick up the award.Anyway, here are my picks for the rest of the awards:

Artist of the Year: even though Okyeame Kwame only had one very strong song I think he will still win the artist of the year because his ‘Woso’ song was pretty strong.

Most Popular Song of the Year: Okyeame’s ‘Woso’ was very strong but I think ‘Angelina’ by Praye may win this one. But I wish Ngozi by Michael Dwamena wins.

Discovery of the Year: a 3-way battle between R2Bees, Asem and Wanlov. But since R2bees do not have an album out yet they may be ruled out by the selection committee. Kubulor achieved a lot with his music as well but based on popularity, I think Asem will take this one.

Best Male Vocal Performance: a 2-way battle between Kwabena Kwabena and Richie. But Richie’s voice is a bit too high so since it’s a male vocal performance, I think Kwabena Kwabena will knick it. LOL!

Best Female Vocal Performance: Life by Bernice Offei is a wonderful musical piece and I wish it could win the best lyrics/composition. Her vocals on that song were very good but I think gospel diva, Christianna Love may take this one.

Hip Hop Song of the Year: Asem should take this but Pigaro was not strong for me, so Okyeame may win with Woso. I wish Kokonsa by Wanlov could spring a surprise here.

Hiplife Song of the Year: no appearance by Praye in this category and I wonder why. Medo Mmma by Okyeame Kwame wasn’t too strong but may take this because there isn’t really any strong contender.

Hiplife / Hiphop Artiste of the year: this award would have been good for R2Bees but again, technicalities don’t favour them. I will give this one to Asem.

Gospel Song of the Year: Esther Piesie had a very good year and deserves an award in the gospel category but I think in the end, the older faces will win this. It’s going to be a fight between Christiana Love and Philipa Baafi but Mrs. Love may just use experience to knick this.

Gospel Artiste of the Year: Same as above

Contemporary Highlife Song of the Year: Ngozi by Michael Dwamena was good but I’m a sucker for Kwabena Kwabena…LOL. I just hope his association with the NPP does not affect his chances.

Contemporary Highlife Artiste: although Kwabena Kwabena didn’t get much airplay, the guy is good so let’s just give it to him.

Afro Pop Song of the Year: for me it’s between African Money by Sidney and Angelina by Praye. Praye may come out tops.

Reggae Song of the Year: with Blakk Rasta out, im sure true reggae lovers would be rooting for M’akomamu by Papa Wastic and Change Your Constitution – Chizzy Waller.

Best Collaboration of the Year: staright fight between Ade Akye Abia by Christiana Love & Kwaku Gyasi and Woso by Okyeame Kwame/Richie but the latter will have it.
